NRP 76 “Welfare and Coercion” is complete
Thanks to NRP 76, welfare policy and practices are now better researched and documented, and the report to the Federal Council marks its completion. Many of the findings will be incorporated into the “Remembering Tomorrow” programme.
Approximately 170 researchers in 29 teams have been carrying out research for almost eight years as part of NRP 76. They have looked in depth at Swiss welfare policies and practices and created a foundation for future action in these areas. The potential of NRP 76 lies in our ability to shape the future by understanding previous and current developments.
The Federal Council mandated the Swiss National Science Foundation to support this research programme in 2017. In accordance with this mandate, the SNSF has now submitted a report to the Federal Council detailing the progress made, key findings, and resulting recommendations. The Swiss National Science Foundation extends its gratitude to all researchers, Steering Committee members, and programme management, as well as to those affected, the representatives of authorities, archives, professional and specialist organisations, political institutions, and civil society who contributed to and enriched this project.
The results of NRP 76 are presented in three thematic book volumes and the final synthesis, “Interventions in People's Lives”, which includes ten recommendations. Additionally, the website and research database offer an overview of individual projects and their publications.
Many of the findings from NRP 76 have been incorporated into the Federal Office of Justice’s “Remembering Tomorrow” programme, which covers topics relating to the reappraisal of compulsory welfare measures and out-of-home placements. The resources it provides include teaching materials, events, exhibitions and digital content. The Federal Office of Justice will be supporting educational projects concerned with the findings of the scientific reappraisal until 2028. In future, it will provide regular information e-mails on the “Remembering Tomorrow” programme.
