Fostering has a long history of in the Canton of Bern. To this day, foster families continue to play a key role in caring for children and young people outside their family of origin. A large number of other players were – and are – involved. But there has been surprisingly little research in the Bern area. In particular, there has been virtually no in-depth examination of what foster parents actually do.

We will be discussing the changes and continuities. What are the current challenges? What are the trends? And can research help us better understand the present?
